Masters of prose, virtuosos in the kitchen, hedonists in reality, and connoisseurs in literature – this fantastic trio will lure us with their powerful tastes and aromas and subtly lead us into the festivals’ imaginarium – a world that during these early days of June we are going to give ourselves to with all of our senses. An aperitif is how everything starts, and it is always best to begin with a shot of something short, right?

Otvorenje festivala I Opening of the Festival
Što se zaista dogodilo? I What Actually Happened?

Hanif Kureishi
Moderira I Moderated by: Roman Simić

It is truly fortunate that Hanif Kureishi said he would go mad if he didn’t write, because the world would be robbed of his works. Always sharp, lucid and witty, he often, together with the protagonists of his texts, takes up the position of a (reluctant) outsider, and on this occasion, we will find out about the British society, the world and the times we are living in, and about actually happened between “The Buddha of Suburbia” and “What Happened?” in a conversation between this literary heavyweight and a master of ceremony and favorite Croatian writer, Roman Simić. Maybe the answer is “The Nothing”.

Priča je konj I The Story is a Horse

Danijel Žeželj, Alen i Nenad Sinkauz, Marco Quarantotto

The story is a horse, that’s what Kafka first intuited. And Calvino bequeathed the metaphor of velocity to this millennium by praising the agile thought, clear-cut style, condensed and succinct expression – be it a flash of instant intuition or the fruit of patiently accumulated thoughts and emotions. Which story will the marvelous brushstrokes and rhythm of Danijel Žeželj’s painting and the Sinkauz brothers’ and Marco Quarantotto’s music take us into? Find out tonight, and only tonight.

Davne 2002. kavicu smo pili s Andrejom Puplinom, kultnim protagonistom i koautorom Šimpragine prve knjige kvartovske & stvarnosne proze u zagrebačkom slengu koju su nazivali prikazom izgubljene generacije devedesetih, a dvadeset godina kasnije čitamo „Izvještaj o generaciji“ – Šimpraga već u naslovu priziva još jednu generacijsku smotru, ocrtavajući nam junake i antijunake srednje dobi, o čijim će stvarnosnim i fiktivnim udarcima i stranputicama razgovarati s Jadrankom Pintarić.

Back in 2002, we drank coffee with Andrej Puplin, the legendary protagonist and co-author of Šimraga’s first book of urban prose written in the Zagreb slang, which was called a portrayal of the lost generation of the nineties, and now, twenty years later, we are reading “A Generation Report”, whose title evokes yet another generational moment, drawing sketches of middle-aged heroes and antiheroes whose fictional and factual blows and detours Dalibor Šimpraga discusses with Jadranka Pintarić.

A conversation on different ways to write one’s own autobiography, on a life that is nonlinear, on friendship amongst writers, on letters with which we can “create and destroy the world, be born and die, love, suffer, threaten, help, demand, order about, pray, console, laugh…” with one of the most interesting and respected Italian writers of today.

Razgovor I Conversation
Regija i ja: Me & Yu I Me, Myself and the Region: Me & Yu

Lana Bastašić, Rumena Bužarovska, Lejla Kalamujić, Danilo Lučić
Moderira I Moderated by: Boris Postnikov

Možemo to zvati „regijom“, možemo to zvati „zajedničkim kulturnim prostorom“, možemo to zvati „Književnom Republikom Jugoslavijom“: trideset i kusur godina nakon raspada SFRJ nešto je, čini se, ostalo. Tri autorice i jedan autor u vrijeme raspada države pisali su školske zadaće, a njihovi tekstovi danas bez problema prelaze postjugoslavenske granice.

We can call it “the region”, we can also call it “our shared cultural space”, or we can call it “The Literary Republic of Yugoslavia”: thirtysomething years after the collapse of SFRY, something, it seems, is still here. At the time the country was falling apart, these four authors were writing their homework assignments, and today their work effortlessly transgresses the post-Yugoslav borders. Rumena Bužarovska from Skopje, Lejla Kalajmujić from Sarajevo, Danilo Lučić from Belgrade, and Lana Bastašić from different cities are coming to the FESS to tell us how, or if, they perceive a new regional scene: is the shared space still here or is it disappearing before our very eyes?

From “The Buddha of Suburbia”, a novel that some thirty years ago marked a tectonic shift in the British literary scene and influenced an entire generation of new writers, all the way to a 2019 collection of essays and short stories titled “What Happened?”, Hanif Kureishi remains an uncompromising, merciless commentator of the British society. On the unavoidable subjects that permeate his novels and short stories, on the Great Britain he grew up in and the post-Brexit Great Britain, on identity and (not)belonging, on London as an endless source of fascination, but also on pop culture, especially music (David Bowie, that is), Hanif Kureishi in a conversation with Vesna Ukić Košta.

Senko Karuza famozni je kratkopričaš i pjesnik, a – šapuće se – i osnivač festivala Mare, Mare! i neformalnog Multimedijalnog mobilnog centra za istraživanje alternativnih načina preživljavanja na malim i pučinskim otocima. U razgovoru o pisanju i promicanju književnosti na lokalnom, globalnom i virtualnom prostranstvu, pod vodstvom kormilarke Staše Aras, i same nekadašnje ZaPisovke, snage će udružiti predsjednica ZaPisa Iva Pejković, Igor Eškinja te Senko Karuza.

Festival and the informal Multimedia Mobile Center for the Exploration of Alternative Methods of Survival on Small and Open Sea Islands. The conversation about promoting literature in the local, global and virtual expanses will be navigated by Staša Aras, a former member of ZaPis herself, while the president of ZaPis, Iva Pejković, will join forces with Igor Eškinja and Senko Karuza.

First published stories, first published collections, first literary prizes: and the artist has neither her health insurance nor income. How does a young writer reach her readers, what inspires her and drives her forward, how does she find the time to write, all of these and many other secrets of a healthy relationship with literature will be unraveled by Lara Mitraković.

This is, in a nutshell, probably the best way to describe “Listen Here”, a program that has for years been bringing people from different walks of life (writers, musicians, painters, journalists…) to various Zagreb stages to tell their stories about songs they are either in love with or that remind them of something special. For this special FESS incarnation, we will be listening to writers and their stories about (pop) songs. Which ones? Find out in Tvornica Kulture.

O ovim i mnogim drugim pitanjima govore ljudi koji ih organiziraju, propituju, žiriraju, a bome i osvajaju – Ana Brnardić, Ivana Dražić, Monika Herceg i Kruno Lokotar!

Shorts are everyone’s favorite literary sweets – short short stories in which we have only just entered the story and we are already getting out, but with a different taste in our mouth. Six characters in search for the answers to the questions: what shorts do to the language, how they sweeten and restore it, is less more or is more less and how to say it all in a nutshell.

RAZGOVOR
Ali znamo kako i o čemu Jergović i Mehmedinović pišu i zasebno i jedan drugome, a čut ćemo kako govore i o čemu najbolje šute.
RAZGOVOR
Pravo na priču
Melatu Uche Okorie, Tomica Bajsić
Homo Narrans, tema 18. izdanja fekp-a propituje sposobnost i potrebu ljudskog bića da priče priča i kroz njih vidi i razumije svijet oko sebe. O važnosti prava da ispričamo svoju i čujemo tuđu priču s Melatu Uche Okorie i Tomicom Bajsićem, nagrađivanim književnikom i predsjednikom hrvatskog pen centra, razgovara Cyrille Cartier.
PREDSTAVLJANJE KNJIGE
Melania G. Mazzucco, Ana Badurina, Neven Vulić
ZATVARANJE FEKP-A 2019. I G-TOČKA
RAZGOVOR
Pisci i migracije

U svojevrsnom nastavku globalnog hita Preživjeti s pingvinom briljantni satiričar postkomunizma Kurkov majstorski barata grotesknim humorom, vjerno dočaravajući razdoblje tranzicije, vladavinu mafijaša, sitnih i krupnih kriminalaca, korumpiranu vlast i potkupljene medije.

“A tragicomic masterpiece,” as The Daily Telegraph described the novel Penguin Lost, is just one of many accolades given to the book that once again shows why Andrei Kurkov is the most widely read Ukrainian author. In a sort of a sequel to the global bestseller Death and the Penguin, Kurkov, a brilliant satirist of post-communism, masterfully deals with grotesque humor and faithfully depicts the transition period, the rule of mobsters, small- and big-time crooks, corrupt government and the bought off media.

O privatnosti u tekstu, o tome kako se i koliko daju svaki u svojoj umjetnosti u doba površnog čitanja i eskalacije doslovnosti s Vladimirom Šagadinom razgovaraju dvije domaće zvijezde: Zoran Ferić i Damir Urban.

The misunderstandings about the portion of the autobiographical in a story or a song are many and they never stop, just as is the case with the fascination and speculation around the question: what does the text say about its maker? On privacy in the text, on how and how much does each of them give of themselves into their own respective art forms in the age of shallow reading and escalation of literalness – Zoran Ferić and Damir Urban, two Croatian stars, in a conversation with Vladimir Šagadin.

Izgubljeno nasljeđe? Iskustvo (s) margine | Heritage Lost? Experiences From/Of the Margin

FRANKO DOTA, NORA VERDE

U više-manje uniformnom svijetu upravo nam perspektive Drugih u živote mogu unijeti dašak kritičnosti, mašte i inovativnosti. No kako čuvamo i pamtimo njihova iskustva? O tim i drugim pitanjima razgovarat će povjesničar Franko Dota i hrvatska spisateljica Nora Verde.

In the more or less uniform world, the perspectives of the Others are the ones that can bring a breath of criticism, imagination and innovation. The marginalized are forced not only to think about the changes that should take place in order to stop feeling like the second-class citizens, but to be allowed to live their difference. But, how do we keep and remember their experiences? How are we going to introduce the rich history of the marginalized into archives, school curricula, universities, our everyday life? How to make it easier for the new generations of the Others, so that they don’t have to start all over again? These and other questions in a conversation with the historian Franko Dota and the Croatian writer Nora Verde.

„Tragikomično remek-djelo“, kako je roman Zakon puža okarakterizirao Daily Telegraph, tek jedan je u nizu hvalospjeva knjizi kojom Andrej Kurkov još jednom pokazuje zašto je najčitaniji ukrajinski pisac.

O ritmu u romanu i ritmu u priči.
O privatnosti u tekstu, o tome kako se i koliko daju svaki u svojoj umjetnosti u doba površnog čitanja i eskalacije doslovnosti s Vladimirom Šagadinom razgovaraju dvije domaće zvijezde: Zoran Ferić i Damir Urban.

When do we write, or better: when do we not write about ourselves? The misunderstandings about the portion of the autobiographical in a story or a song are many and they never stop, just as is the case with the fascination and speculation around the question: what does the text say about its maker? On privacy in the text, on how and how much does each of them give of themselves into their own respective art forms in the age of shallow reading and escalation of literalness – Zoran Ferić and Damir Urban, two Croatian stars, in a conversation with Vladimir Šagadin.

ANDREJ KURKOV

„Tragikomično remek-djelo“, kako je roman Zakon puža okarakterizirao Daily Telegraph, tek jedan je u nizu hvalospjeva knjizi kojom Andrej Kurkov još jednom pokazuje zašto je najčitaniji ukrajinski pisac. U svojevrsnom nastavku globalnog hita Preživjeti s pingvinom briljantni satiričar postkomunizma Kurkov majstorski barata grotesknim humorom, vjerno dočaravajući razdoblje tranzicije, vladavinu mafijaša, sitnih i krupnih kriminalaca, korumpiranu vlast i potkupljene medije.
