Bartholomew Ryan

Born and raised in Ireland, Bartholomew Ryan is a writer, musician and philosopher,  and was research fellow and philosophy coordinator at NOVA University Lisbon (2011-2025), lecturer at Bard College Berlin (2007-2011), and has taught at various universities in Brazil, India, Zagreb, Split, Oxford, Aarhus, Bishkek and Dublin. His forthcoming book is called James Joyce: The Unfolding Art of Flourishing and Decay (OUP 2026). He is the author of the philosophical biography Critical Lives: Fernando Pessoa (Reaktion Press 2024), and Kierkegaard’s Indirect Politics: Interludes with Lukács, Schmitt, Benjamin and Adorno (Brill/Rodopi 2014). He has also co-edited four books, the most recent being: Fernando Pessoa and Philosophy: Countless Lives Inhabit Us (with A. Cardiello and G. Tusa, Rowman & Littlefield 2021). In music, he leads the international dream-folk band The Loafing Heroes, releasing six albums (2009-2019); he released a solo album called Jabuti (under the name Loafing Hero) in 2022; and is a member of the experimental audio formation called Headfoot.
