Pobjeći od stvarnosti | To Escape from Reality
INGO SCHULZE
Long ago, a poet said that the only constant in this world is change. And he was right, as poets often are. Political systems change, the climate changes, every day we are shaken by changes big and small, and this – no matter how unaware of it we may be – affects us greatly. In turbulent times, an individual perhaps cannot do much, and it can appear that reality is but a hindrance, yet precisely this (though, of course, not only it) is what our old acquaintance Ingo Schulze writes about so wonderfully in his new, magical novel Die Rechtschaffenen Mörder (The Righteous Murderers).
From fairy tale to reality and back, along a path that promises nothing short of a genuine thrill of literature, we are going to be taken by a literary master of the old craft, a true contemporary classic, one of those who remember Europe of the past, who live Europe today, but who also sense what it will be like tomorrow.

Izlazak iz sjene | Coming out of a Shadow
NUALA O’CONNOR
James Joyce made an indelible mark on twentieth-century fiction, including the short story. Unfortunately, too few people know about Nora Barnacle, the woman who served as the inspiration for Molly Bloom, without whose support and patience Joyce might not have achieved all that he did. Nuala O’Connor’s novel is a brave portrait of an equally brave and, for its time, unorthodox woman, offering fresh perspective on something that’s common knowledge, as all great literature does.

Zaborav koji ćemo biti I The Oblivion We Shall Be
O pisanju o obitelji i pisanju o nasilju, o Kolumbiji osamdesetih godina prošlog stoljeća i drugim, nama kudikamo bližim prostorima u kojima djeca gube roditelje usred bijela dana s velikim kolumbijskim piscem Héctorom Abadom Faciolinceom razgovara Roman Simić.
Thirty-seven years ago in Medellín, in broad daylight, the doctor and human rights activist Héctor Abad Gómez was murdered. His fictionalized biography, El Olvido que Seremos (Oblivion: A Memoir), was written by his son, thus creating a masterpiece of devastating courage and integrity, one of the most momentous books of contemporary literature in the Spanish language. On writing about family and writing about violence, on Colombia of the 1980s and other lands, much closer to us, where children lose their parents in broad daylight – Roman Simić in a conversation with the great Colombian author Héctor Abad Faciolince.

A vijesti u 21. stoljeću dolaze odasvud.
By definition, change is desirable, yet not necessarily so. This slight difference is increasingly felt around the world, if we are looking at the big picture, but when we adjust our focus for a clearer view, we see that it blows and sweeps, sometimes a hurricane, other times just a breeze, across Europe and beyond, in our midst and in our neighborhood, everywhere the news come from. And in the 21st century, the news keeps coming from everywhere. The scent and the taste of change, be it good or bad, are first felt by the writers. What they have to say may not lift our spirits or soothe our souls, but at least the image will be sharper. Sometimes one cannot ask for much more than that.

Short but sweet! Behind these familiar words lies an evening of distinctive artistic expressions, experiences, and approaches to creation. Once again, the Shorts bring together different arts to speak about the same thing – how we create, when, and for whom.
Illustrator Klasja Habjan has her own way of telling stories, through text and image. Vid Barić has trodden the boards that mean life as a screenwriter, while Nina Bajsić will speak (and read) from the perspective of a singer-songwriter. Edo Popović, our literary bard, is the icing on the cake of our lineup, while Roman and Ivan will make sure that the orchestra keeps playing as usual: a round of reading, a round of laughter, a round of good art… and life passes by. Until then, until it passes, drop by on Friday, clink your glasses with the Shorts. We look forward to seeing you.

Priče koje pokreću | Moving Stories
Female Human Animal
O tome kako se i koliko različite umjetnosti isprepliću, o tome kako govoriti isto drugim umjetničkim sredstvom i koliko to isto onda postaje drugačije svjedoči i poticajna plesna izvedba Female Human Animal.
Words can give rise to movement, movement can inspire words. That’s how it has always been and always will be. Female Human Animal is an inspiring dance performance that bears witness to the manners and ways in which different arts intertwine, to the ways of conveying the same through different artistic expressions, and to seeing how the same then becomes something so different. The inspiration for it came from the eponymous film, for which our guest Chloe Aridjis wrote the screenplay and in which she starred.

Knjiga oblaka | Book of Clouds
Chloe Aridjis
Chloe Aridjis gained international recognition with her first novel Book of Clouds. The novel won a prestigious French award for the best debut in a foreign language, and The Guardian included it among the top ten novels set in Berlin. Clouds are a prominent motif in the novel, their shape constantly changing under the influence of wind and winds.
In a conversation about this novel, the works that followed, about the wind, changes and (not only) literary magic, Chloe Aridjis and Morana Zibar, a renowned quizzer and – something you may not have known – an expert in Croatian and English language and literature.

There has not been a moment in human history that has not been traumatic. However, some moments are more traumatic than others. Lately, paradigms are beginning to falter, everything that for decades we have been taking for granted suddenly turns out not to be so certain, something that may be finite after all, a stone that will turn out to be sand. How to remain human in all this chaos, how to stand in the wind and not break, even if you sometimes bend? There’s no question more important than that, and if anything can bring us closer to an answer – it’s only stories.

Brassaï once quipped that night does not show things, it only suggests them. Just like a good story, after all. And what are Senko Karuza’s stories if not good stories? The night, just like good stories, liberates and exposes us. Senko’s stories are stylistically brilliant, poetically charged, witty, but also devastating. We’ll talk about long, soft nights and the mornings after, but also about what makes a good story and how that good story comes to be.

The room is quiet and the window is closed, the air is stale and heavy; then, new voices arrive, open up the space, some new winds breeze through, and suddenly, we feel light. These four literary voices certainly bring freshness and some new perspectives, so we can safely surrender to them and let them sweep us away, knowing they’ll carry us to some better shores.

I uz priče, naravno, muzika. Jer sve, baš sve je bolje uz malo melodije, ponešto ritma.
Everything we know can be a short story. Short, regrettably; a story, certainly. The whole of human experience is a story, science is a story, the universe is a story: everything is a story. Stories will endure long after we’re gone, in the ether, elusive, with any luck, they’ll tell our stories to someone else. And no change, no wind will wash them away, for indestructibility is their nature. It is what those who fear them feel, it is what those who adore them admire. And alongside stories, of course, there’s music. Because everything, absolutely everything, is better with a little tune, a hint of rhythm.
